Word Maps

Introduction to Word Maps

Word Maps are simple tools that help people with aphasia practice finding and saying the words they want to use. When a word feels “stuck” or hard to retrieve, a Word Map helps break it down into smaller pieces—such as what category it belongs to, what it’s used for, where you find it, what it looks like, and what other words are related to it. Thinking about these features strengthens connections in the brain and makes it easier to access the word again in the future.

Communicating With Your Partner

Word Maps are meant to be used together. Communication partners can guide the conversation by asking supportive questions, offering choices, modeling answers, and giving time to respond. The goal is not to test or correct, but to explore the word in a relaxed and supportive way. With regular practice, Word Maps can improve word-finding skills, increase confidence, and make everyday conversations smoother and more successful.
